This species can be found in Thailand, Laos and Vietnam at altitudes of 800-1500m.
D. unicum is best grown mounted under intermediate conditions. Plants of this species should be allowed to dry out gradually through winter into early spring. Bright light and temperatures down to 10°C will ensure spring flowers.
pseudobulbs are up to 25-30cm long and the flowers around 4-5cm across.
An interesting detail about this species is that the trichomes (hair) on the labellum (lip) are considered to function as pseudopollen. It does not only attract insects but may also reward potential pollinators with extra food.
