From the Latin picturatus, which means painted and refers to the intricate spots on the flowers.


One of the most widely distributed Masdevallias, it has been collected in Panama, Costa Rica,
Colombia, Venezuela, Guayana, Ecuador, Bolivia and Peru. It grows in the cool and wet cloud forests at elevations from 1500 to 2750m.

The plant is small, with a densely tufted growth habit, 3-4cm tall. The flowers are about 2cm wide. Best grown mounted in high humidity, 12-22ºC.
