Named in honor of Alexander Hirtz of Quito, Ecuador, who discovered this species.

P. hirtzii grows in the cloud forest near Nambija of Ecuador at altitudes of around 1200 m.

Flower size 1cm. Plant size 3cm. Intermediate - cool conditions.
