This species has a wide range of distribution - it is found in Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Ecuador at altitudes of 600-2000m.

There are some variability in color, size and shape depending on origin. Larger forms are found in Ecuador. This is the translucent yellow color form, var. ventricosa. The typical color form derives from Central America and is known as var. alexandrae. There is also an alba form, var. alba.

M. nidifica does well mounted and is best grown in intermediate - cool conditions.
